Travelling from the UK to France

There are several ways that you can travel from the UK to France – here are some of them:

Ferry from Portsmouth to Caen

Whether you are driving or coming by foot this is a good option (and often the easiest) for many people but prices do vary considerably depending on the holiday seasons.  Ships tend to sail this route all year round.  Foot passenger prices are considerably cheaper than car prices usually but if you’re not travelling alone then the car prices may work better for you as you pay for the car, not the number of passengers.  There are trains to the stations in Portsmouth (either Cosham or Harbour stations) and then a short taxi ride from the train station to the ferry terminal (taxis are usually outside the stations).  If you come by foot we can collect you from the ferry terminal at Caen.  If you are driving we are just over an hour away from Caen Ports.

Passenger Ferry bookings are made through Brittany Ferries https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/booking/trip

Ferry from Poole to Cherbourg

Another good option for driving and on foot.  This route is seasonal so check the Brittany Ferries website to see whether it is available for you.  Again there are trains to nearby stations and taxi’s to the ferry terminal.  If you come by foot we can collect you from the ferry terminal at Cherbourg.  If you’re driving we are approximately 1.5-2 hours away from Cherbourg.

The roads are generally very good here and much quieter than in the UK – please remember that the French drive on the RIGHT side of the road and that roundabouts drive anti-clockwise.

Ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff

This is more suitable for drivers as the foot options from the Roscoff side are more limited.  By car we are approximately 3-4 hours from Roscoff.  That said the roads are generally much quieter than they are in the UK – please remember that the French drive on the RIGHT side of the road and that roundabouts drive anti-clockwise..

The Shuttle Channel Tunnel by Car

For driving this is a great option and is often cheaper than the ferries.  However, there is much more driving on both sides of the water for most people.  We are approximately 4-5 hours from Calais and whilst the roads are all pretty good and much quieter than the UK, you will either need to navigate Ruen, which is a busy city OR use the payage (small toll fees for using the motorways) or find alternative routes to avoid both.  We recommend this route only for more experienced drivers who are confident about driving in another country.

Flying to Paris and getting the train to Vire

There are plenty of flights to Paris from many UK airports.  On arrival in Paris, you will need to take the Metro to **** station and from there it is a 3 hour train ride to Vire.  The good news is that train prices are considerably less here than in the UK.  The difficulty with this travel option is that sometimes the flight arrivals are after the last train to Vire so it will depend on where you are flying from in the UK as to whether this will work for you. We can collect you from Vire, which is approximately 20 mins away from us.

Taking the Eurostar to Paris and then getting the train to Vire

This is an economic travel option – the most expensive part for many being the “getting to London” part.  The Eurostar goes from St Pancras Station and once you arrive in Paris you will need to take the Metro to **** Station to catch the train to Vire.  We can collect you from Vire, which is approximately 20 mins away from us.

Flying to Nantes

There are some seasonal flights to Nantes from some UK airports and train options to nearby to us.

Flying to Rennes

There are seasonal flights to Rennes from some UK airports. We can collect you from Rennes, which is approximately 2 hours away from us.
